Why pixel art?
Deciding on the art style of a game is a very big decision. You could go as far as to argue that it is the most important one. It is literally there all the time, from the moment you open the game until the moment you close it.
Any of you who have spoken to us in the Discord group know that we LOVE pixel art games and hence we love the art in our game. It might not be so clever to simply pick a style we love though. That is why we did a lot of research and had plenty of discussions before finally deciding on the art style. We have shared our most important points below:
1. Timeless
It is our mission to create a game that is timeless so that in 10 years time the game is still active and being played. If you were to use the latest 3D graphics, then in some years those will look outdated as technological progress makes it possible to create even sharper and more lifelike graphics. This is why it’s hard for these games to stay relevant for a longer time. Pixel art, on the other hand, is truly timeless. You could go back to a pixel art game that is 30 years old now and the graphics won’t look off or outdated, it will simply look like awesome pixel art.
2. Fitting with the vision
The gaming experience we want to give is one that resembles the experience from early in all of our gamer days, like that of the OG arcade halls or the early PC and gameboy games. When people step into our game, we want them to feel like they did in those worry-free times.
3. Fitting with the game
We wanted to make a simpler game, that is stripped of complexity unrelated to skill. A simpler game fits with simpler art. Going with the latest life-like 3D graphics would be overkill for what we are creating here. When it comes to the simpler art forms we think pixel art is much more flexible and charming as compared to voxel style or cheap 3D models.
4. Target audience
A majority of the crypto crowds are between 20–40 years old and grew up with arcade games or with pixel art games in general, which is why we believe this is a great fit. While we decided on the art style long before even the first NFT boom, our theory has been proven right by the market as many of the most popular projects have been pixel art projects (e.g. Punks, Cryptoadz, and CyberKongz).
5. It leaves more to the imagination
We want to add interesting and unique characters and customizations. When using pixel art a lot more is left for the mind to interpret and imagine on its own. Two people could both be looking at the same character but still visualize it very differently.
Of course, it's also just an awesome art style. We hope you like our game art just as much as we do :)
